Orilium: Gear Up Wrap Up

If you hang around the bookish side of the internet, you probably know all about G from Book Roast's Magical Readathon. The world and lore surrounding it that she has created is impeccable, and as soon as she announced Orilium last year, I was definitely sucked in.

Last week, G held a mini, week-long readathon called Orilium: Gear Up. The point of this readathon was to choose our characters' conduit, as well as - if you're in the Order of the Crescent, at least - to choose a familiar. I'm going to be talking about the 2 books I read for the mini readathon, as well as why I chose them and all of that.

(Technically, I will only be 'wrapping up' one of the books, as the second one I am still currently reading, but G has said that time constraints for the readathon aren't very strict.)

First of all, let me introduce you to my character, Kay:

She is a Fire Earthling from Kerador. She is definitely a city girl, and tends to be the life of the party - though she's prone to making decisions she later regrets. She's got a heart of gold, though, and she's desperate to start learning how to control her fire magic at Orilium.

Familiar

Kay's familiar is going to be a charcoal grey cat called Ash. I decided to read The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, because I needed a book with a cat on the cover and it fit. I'd been meaning to read it for a while, but I'd seen some mixed reviews so I was a little bit nervous. I ended up quite enjoying it, though - gave it 4 stars. The concept was fun but really thought-provoking at the same time, and even though it felt a bit formulaic and the ending was kind of predictable, my appreciation of it wasn't really lessened.

Conduit

Kay's conduit of choice is a bow and arrow. The prompt for this was to read a book with the word 'hunt' either as part of the book/series name, or the author's name. I went for City of Bones by Cassandra Clare for this one, which is the first book in the Shadowhunters series. I'm still halfway through this one, but so far I'm liking it. I wish I'd read it when I was younger - it had been on my tbr since the movie came out - but I'm glad I'm finally getting to it!

That's it for my Orilium: Gear Up wrap up. I am so excited for the month-long readathon coming in April! Have you creates your character yet? Let me know!
