I've seen a few Booktubers create this list every year, and so I've started doing the same. The point is to make a list of books that you have to read by the end of the year - and if they don't get read, they get unhauled. It gives me a push to read books that have sat on my shelves, unread, for years, and also gives me a guilt-free approach to unhauling books I'm no longer interested in.
These are the 10 books on my self-destruct list for 2022:
1. White Fang by Jack London
If I remember correctly, this was an old copy my grandma found and gave to me YEARS ago. I don't think I would have ever picked it up myself, but I might as well try and read it seeing as I do have it.
2. Requiem għal Sieħbi Faxxista by Francis Ebejer
3. Esther by Lawrence Quintano
4. Għana Bikri u Għani Waħħari by Ġorġ Pisani
I'm pretty sure these were Maltese books my secondary school (equivalent to high school, kind of) gave everyone at graduation. Don't really know anything about them, tbh.
5. The Human Body by Ana Doblado (trans. Maureen Spurgeon)
6. Human Body by Kirti Kaul & Shreya Seth
I dug these two out of storage a few months ago, and for some reason put them back on my shelves. They're from when I was about 10 and had a very short-lived goal of becoming a doctor.
7. Leli ta' Ħaż-Żgħir by Ġużè Ellul Mercer
This one's a Maltese historical novel I was supposed to study for my A level. I ended up sitting for the exam a year early, and I never got round to reading it. I would like to get to it this year, though, as I've heard great things about it.
8. Monografija by Pawlu Aquilina
Same story as the above, however this one I'm not as excited to read. It's a poetry collection, and sometimes poetry can go right over my head, but I really should give it a try.
9. The War Poems by Wilfred Owen
Speaking of poetry, The War Poems by Wilfred Owen is a collection I need to read. I read quite a number of them for my A level, and found them so harrowing and just think they're must-reads, so I hope to get to the full collection this year.
10. Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom by Tsugumi Ohba (trans. Pookie Rolf)
Unlike the rest of the books on this list, this one hasn't even been on my shelves for a year. However, I've kind of lost interest in it, but want to give it a shot before I give up on it.
So, there you have it - these are the books that will self-destruct if I haven't read them by the end of the year. What's a book you've been meaning to get to for ages? Lemme know!
